English players overseas 2008/9

We all know about the performances in the senior England side, and it is easy enough to check those of the England Lions in New Zealand, but what about those players who have not been selected for these tours?  Some players choose to play Grade cricket in Australia, but how many appear in top class domestic cricket overseas?  I decided to do some research, and here are the results:

Graham Napier (Wellington, New Zealand)

As one of the stars of the English one-day season, and in particular with a startling innings against Sussex in the Twenty20 tournament, Napier has been spoken of as a possible selection for England’s one-day squads.  However, it is with the ball that Napier has caught the eye in New Zealand, being the leading wicket taker with 14 wickets apiece in the State Twenty20 and 4-day State Championship and 21 in the 50-over State Shield.

Bilal Shafayat (Pakistan Customs)

Shafayat has been captaining Pakistan Customs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, but has struggled with the bat so far, with a lone half-century in 14 innings.

Dmitri Mascarenhas (Otago, NZ)

Playing for Otago in the one-day and Twenty20 competitions, Mascarenhas has enjoyed a reasonable season, being the most economical bowler in the State Shield, with a batting average of 44.50, and decent returns with both bat and ball in the State Twenty20 tournament.  Otago won the State Twenty20 competition.

Darren Pattinson (Victoria, Australia)

A shortened first class season thus far for England’s 2008 one-test-wonder has seen best bowling figures of 5-38 for Victoria.

That, so far as I can determine, is it.  Not quite what we are used to in England, with a flood of overseas players and Kolpaks being the cause of much dismay, with concerns about a lack of opportunities for young English players.

If I have missed anyone, please feel free to let me know through the comments.
